At her core, Vivi is perhaps one of the kindest people you are ever likely to come across. She always puts the welfare of others above her own, and she isn't afraid to speak out against cruelty. This stems in part from her upbringing as Princess of Alabasta; her father has always tried to do what is best for his subjects and Vivi has learned from him that the most important part of being a good monarch is ensuring the welfare of all the citizens, rather than just the elite few. She also spent quite a bit of her childhood as vice-president of the 'Suna Suna Clan', which enabled her to experience a normal childhood playing with other children, as well as learning the importance of friendship and a solidarity with others no matter what class they come from. Her childhood friend, Kohza, eventually became leader of the revolutionaries in the war that nearly destroyed Alabasta, but Vivi still tried to see the best in him, knowing that he was fighting for what he believed was right, even if it turned him against herself and her father.

Vivi's biggest downfall is her reluctance to share what she takes on as her responsibilities. While she is very touched, even humbled, when anyone goes out of their way for her, she can also feel a little uncomfortable, as if she is inconveniencing them, or is a burden to them. Despite the Straw Hats fighting alongside her through Alabasta, it takes Luffy having to spell out that they would have to put their lives on the line in a heated argument with Vivi for her to finally accept it and to stop herself from her innate need to protect them too. At the same time, she would never think twice about going out of her way for anyone else, even if it means giving up her own life. She would prefer to shoulder the entire burden herself rather than see someone she cares about in pain.

Vivi prefers not to fight unless there is absolutely no alternative, going so far as to physically place herself between the two warring armies in Alabasta in a desperate attempt for no one apart from herself to get hurt. However, when she does need to fight, she can be a formidable opponent, relying on her accuracy and agility in her attacks while not having much in the way of brute strength. Her fighting skills were mostly learned during her time in Baroque Works, and she's not above fighting dirty, such as her attempt to use a hypnotic dance on Zoro and her preference for surprise attacks. Moreover, while Vivi is at heart a pacifist, she also accepts that to some extent, the ends justify the means. It is difficult to know exactly what lengths she went to while undercover in Baroque Works, but as a frontier agent one of her main jobs was to attack ships just entering the Grand Line to raise funds for the organisation, potentially giving her a relatively high body count, not to mention that the first time Vivi is introduced it's while she's attempting to kill the whale Laboon. While she's shown as desperately trying to bring peace with as few casualties as possible later in Alabasta, this is counterbalanced by her actions while undercover in Baroque Works, something Vivi never really shows guilt or remorse over in the series.

Vivi is noted for keeping her cool in situations that require it. For example, on arrival at Drum Kingdom, Vivi intervenes when Luffy is about to start a fight with the villagers who want them to leave, resulting in her getting shot but being able to show through her words and actions that not everything can be solved with fighting. Her diplomacy is shown even as a child, where she deflates a potential international incident by accepting the blame when Wapol slapped her, rising above the pettiness of such a cruel ruler and leading by her own example. However, while Vivi generally comes across as serene, this is a result of her years of training as a princess. While she's not usually quick to panic, she can let little things build up until she breaks under the weight of them. She can also be quick to anger if she sees someone being mistreated.

Being a princess, Vivi is very cultured and sophisticated, and tries to maintains an air of politeness at all times. Despite all of this, she is somewhat of a tomboy, and would very much prefer to be off on an adventure than stuck in the palace. Vivi can be quite naive; this especially shows through in her interactions with others, whether it is her continual politeness, her automatic believal of Usopp's bragging, her absolute sincerity, and her foolish belief that if she tries her hardest then no one else will get hurt.
